Cafepress fait la promotion de l’anti-France

Cafepress.com donne dans l’anti-France.

Cafepress.com, la startup américaine que j’ai moi-même utilisée pour commander des tasses et autocollants à l’effigie Des Grenouilles dans la Vallée, vient d’envoyer sa lettre d’informations à ses abonnés, dans laquelle elle met en avant quelques créations d’actualité. Parmi les Hot Designs se trouve l’illustration ci-contre, un modèle de French-bashing imbécile, probablement issu du même type de cerveau embrumé par la bière bon marché et la connerie xénophobe qui en 2002 faisait la promotion des Freedom Fries et organisait le boycott de vins de bordeaux sous prétexte de nationalisme à deux cents, celui qui a mené ce pays à déclencher une guerre civile sanglante en Irak.

L’excellent SuperFrenchie chronique d’ailleurs quotidiennement (ou presque) les exploits anti-français des Américains xénophobes, semi-illettrés et abrutis en tous genres sur son blog avec une rigueur et une verve que je lui envie. J’ai résisté jusqu’à ce jour à me lancer dans ce fonds de commerce, car ma foi il fait ça mieux que moi.

Mais Cafepress.com est après tout une entreprise de Silicon Valley, basée à Foster City, qui compte dans ses clients des institutions comme craigslist ou Dilbert. J’avais déjà remarqué ce type de contenu parmi les boutiques de Cafepress, et bien que violant de façon flagrante les conditions de service sur le contenu imposées par le site, je ne m’en étais pas trop inquiété, observant le déclin progressif du sentiment anti-français aux États-Unis.

Jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Pourquoi avoir mis en avant cette illustration imbécile et offensante ? Mystère. Je viens donc de me fendre d’un courrier à Cafepress.com, ainsi que d’un message téléphonique à l’intention du service de relations publiques de l’entreprise.

Ce vendredi matin, le contenu de la page correspondant à la lettre d’information du site, Cafepress Wire (reproduite plus haut), a changé, et l’image xénophobe a été remplacée par une autre, inoffensive. Cela dit c’est un peu tard, puisque l’ancienne version est celle qui a été envoyée aux abonnés. Les illustrations anti-françaises sont par ailleurs toujours sur le site, y compris le magasin Burn France.

    Parce que le mec qui fait ces t-shirts idiots a payés Cafepress pour être en première page avec un lien vers sa boutique!!!
    même si la rage de 2002 envers les français a fait fureur, je n’ai personnellement jamais été victime d’aucun bashing, ici ou les gens sont un peu plus évolués et qui, la plupart du temps, adore la france…
    alors bon si ca fait plaisir aux beaufs de porter ca… les chiens aboient, la caravane passe…

    En tout cas, ils ont vite reagit, cette image, n’est deja plus disponible…
    Suite a ton email, j’etais entrain de preparer un bel email, quand lorsque j’ai voulu leur ecrire en joignant le lien, la page web correspondante etait indisponible…
    Comme quoi…
    En tout cas, bravo pour la vigilance et pour la reaction…

    Je ne suis pas dans la “vallée” (je suis à Londres), mais suis de tout cœur avec vous. J’ai envoyé aux deux adresses indiqués le message suvant:

    I am surprised, for many reasons.

    I would have thought that the wave of francophobia that swept over the USA a few years ago would have subsided somewhat by now. It had started because of French opposition to going to war in Iraq. Given the way things have evolved since then, some would say this opposition was not altogether unreasonable.

    Also: would you sell material with “F… black people” or “F… the Jews”? Of course you wouldn’t. Such slogans would be offensive and totally unacceptable. So what makes us (oh yes, I am French) fair game?

    Until someone brings me sound arguments showing me that I am wrong, I can only conclude that you are flouting your own guidelines, or that your “content policy” is tinged with hypocrisy.

    Et en partie, dû à une campagne nulle.

    Personellement ici dans la Bay Area je n’ai jamais rien entendu contre la France, nor been insulted or anything like that. Mais a quoi vous attendez vous ? CafePress is catering to the majority of the US population, we’re talking middle america and the mid-west here, the same people who voted for Bush. Whether they’re based out of the Bay Area or Wyoming, I don’t think it matters. I’m French and proud, and obviously appalled by that kind of childsih stuff, but I can take it with humour but don’t you think that whining and act offended will only reinforce the image middle america has of the French people ?

    I understand what you’re saying. But first of all, I can only take something with humor when it’s funny. It’s not. However, I didn’t react at first because I thought ignoring the seemingly dying wave of French-bashing was the best thing to do. Until I saw the Cafepress.com newsletter, which prominently featured the offending design.
    Cafepress.com also tolerates racist content in its “Marketplace” - including a “White Pride” store and designs using ethnic slurs like “ragheads” and calling for the annihilation of various countries and religions, including Iran, Israel and Islam.
    I just don’t think either it’s acceptable for a company which own terms of service prohibit “hate and/or racist terms” to get away with tolerating racist and xenophobic content on their site. If Cafepress.com responds, invokes free speech and declares they won’t take down the offensive content, we’ll make sure they rewrite their own terms of service - which I doubt they will. In which case they will have to do something about that type of content.

    je suis d’autant plus pissed que leurs tshirts sont INDISPENSABLES a mes enfants (design specifique medical) - et le seller n’a pas vraiment l’intention d’aller ailleurs (choix et tailles et autres restrictions)

    All of this pales in comparison to the generalized continental hatred of the United States, Americans, no matter who’s in office. You have every right to find it distateful, which it is, but put it in context of the obsessiveness harbored with the US.
    More to the point, place in context the diffidence found by most of the French in Paris and the cities particularly, and compare it the outright Francophilia, which is irrational, felt particularly by Americans and Canadians but by most non-europeans in the world.

    Most people admire something about France. Take that for what it is, and don’t get greedy.

    Y’a un commentaire sur la haine envers les Francais dans le Midwest. Faux. Ca fait 10 ans que j’habite dans le Michigan (35% de ma vie). Not a single time have I been directly confronted to hatred against the French, and I’ve got friends from all walks of life. Lots of learned scholars (I’m affiliated with the U of Michigan), but also lots of farmers (I also own a small farm). My wife is American, and her family all works (or used to work) for GM. They’re not exactly your high-ends cultured folks. Just averages Joes. They definitely don’t care for France, but they just as much don’t care for Canada or California. I’ve never heard a single anti-French slur (except for a few low level bullcrap on TV). Then again, I speak without an accent, I don’t particularly promote France, my wife is American, and I don’t hang around French people. But my house is half-French, my dogs are bilingual, I eat pâté and real bread. I’m always willing to defend France when she’s being unjustly attacked by morons who choose to hate her as a fashion statement. Just to give themselves a style which Nature denied them at birth. I remember a few agitated discussions with my US friends in the wake of the IraQuagmire in the Spring of 2003. They’ve all retracted since and admitted they were wrong and France was right. No offense. Quite frankly, I see far more anti-americanism in France than I see anti-French people in the US (or in the UK for that matter). If some people bother to hate France, it’s because she means something to them. Swaziland means nothing to me: I never love nor hate it. Besides, if there is one guy out there stupid enough to wear those ugly undies advertised by the CafePress, he surely makes great publicity *for* France. Who would want to dress, look, think, smell like a tasteless, unsexy slob?
    PS: When an American confronts you with the shameful behavior of France in 1940 (which is unlikely), ask them why the US government recognized the legitimity of Vichy and exchanged ambassadors with the petiniste government. Remind them that the then rightwingers were against getting involved and saw Hitler as a beneficial element for Europe. And remind them that France suffered more loss in human life during WWII than America has in its wars for the past 200 years. Or else just shrug’em off and walk away. They ain’t worth your time to waste.
